What is CRB?
Recently, the government of Canada has started this program to provide income support to employed and self-employed individuals who are directly affected by COVID-19. The CRB is processed by the Canada Revenue Agency. The first 2-week period for benefits starts from 27 September 2020.
According to new guidelines, if you are eligible for the CRB, you can receive $1,000 for a 2-week period. You need to apply again for every new time period if your situation continues the past 2 weeks. Applicants may apply for up to 13 eligibility periods.
Who Is Eligible?
If you lie under the below situations, you are eligible for CRB;
During the period:
- you were out of work for reasons related to COVID-19
- your working hours get reduced due to COVID-19
- you reside in Canada
- you are at least 15-year-old
- you have a valid SIN number
- In the 12 months before the date you apply, you earned at least $5,000
- you are not receiving other benefits of the following:
- Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit
- Canada Recovery Caregiving Benefit
- short-term disability benefits
- workers' compensation benefits
- Employment Insurance
- Québec Parental Insurance Plan
Verifying the eligibility
The CRA possesses the right to verify that you're eligible to receive the CRB. Individuals who are found to have made fraudulent claims may face additional consequences, such as penalties.
The amount you receive per period
The Canada Recovery Benefit provides a payment of $1,000 for each 2-week period. After the deduction of 10% tax at source, the actual payment you get is $900 per 2-week period or 450 per week.
Tax return
when you file your personal income tax return, you must report the CRB payments that you receive as income.
How to Apply?
- You need to register with CRA. if you are previously receiving payments of CERB, then you must have registered with CRA.
- Make sure you have set up a direct deposit with an active bank account to receive the amount directly into your account.
- Determine your eligibility period
- Apply online or by phone (1-800-959-2019)
Your application may take up to 4 weeks to process from the date you submitted your complete response.
